Which sunscreens are SAFE for dogs?

Personally I prefer to avoid using human cosmetics on dogs. Of course not always did I know and when I was young I used to do many mistakes such as using human shampoo on my Cresteds. This might have or might have not contributed to their skin issues, I'll never know.

The thing is that dogs have different pH of the skin than humans, so using human cosmetics can disturb the protective barrier and throw everything out of balance.

When it comes to shampoos, there are so many great products on the market, it is not difficult to find a good one. But lets talk about SOLAR CREAMS! Because it seems to me that the world has not yet discovered that there are HAIRLESS animals out there! (after an extensive research I found few dog sunscreens, but I am afraid they might only be available in Italy, I will write a full review in next post).

Let's talk about human alternatives that are suitable enough for dogs.

The most important thing is that they DO NOT contain ZINC OXIDE or PARA-AMINOBENZOIC ACID (PABA) as these are toxic for dogs when ingested.

According to American Kennel Club (AKC) the sunscreen you'll use should be free of zinc oxide, PABA, fragrance, it should also be waterproof and you will need at least SPF30.

From my very own experience - do never ever use creams that have been opened for more than 12 months. What I do now is I start the season with brand new creams and in autumn I will get rid of them because I noticed deterioration in UV protection already after 6 months.

If I have to go for a human solar cream, I am looking for a cream that is for children and for sensitive skin, because these are less likely to have fragrance and unneccessary chemicals that could cause irritation or allergy.

This is quite a safe to use product, I have been using it on Bibi because her skin is so pale and delicate. It is very liquid, easy to apply and does not clog pores.

Avène Spray for Children SPF50+

is also zinc oxide, PABA and fragrance free and it is highly water resistant so more suitable if your dog loves swimming.

Garnier Ambre Solaire kids advanced sensitive SPF50

also complies with the requirements stated above.

The Lidl brand Cien actually places very high in various consumer and qulity tests and it is very inexpensive. They have Cien sun for children SPF50+ which is great, zinc oxide, PABA and fragrance free and it is waterproof, we have been using this one also so I can personally recommend.

Eucerin SPF50 SENSITIVE PROTECT is zinc oxide and PABA free however contains fragrance which can irritate dogs.

In a facebook group I have seen people recommending Bioderma Photoderm mineral, which is supposed to be great for people with allergies to chemical barriers but this is NOT SUITABLE FOR DOGS as this product contains ZINC OXIDE!

Bioderma Photoderm KID which is a line for children may initially seem safe but contains XYLITOL that is also toxic for dogs.

ALWAYS CHECK THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS.

When applying the cream, focus on most exposed parts and the less pigmented ones, and do not forget the nose or the tips of the ears as these get very easily sun-burnt!

Personalmente preferisco di evitare a usare cosmetici umani sui cani. Ovviamente non sempre ero abbastanza cosciente e quando ero giovane ho fatto molti errori come per esempio usare lo shampoo umano sulle mie Cinesine. Questo potrebbe aver contribuito o meno ai loro problemi di pelle, ma non lo saprò mai. Il fatto è che i cani hanno un pH della pelle diverso da quello umano, quindi l'uso di cosmetici umani può disturbare la barriera protettiva e sbilanciare tutto. Quando si tratta di shampoo, ci sono così tanti ottimi prodotti sul mercato che non è difficile trovarne uno. Ma parliamo di CREME SOLARI! Perché mi sembra che il mondo non abbia ancora scoperto che esistono animali SENZA PELLO! (dopo una ricerca molto approfondita ho trovato alcuni prodotti solari per cani, ma temo che potrebbero essere disponibili solo in Italia, ne scriverò una recensione completa nel prossimo post). Ora parliamone di alternative umane che sono abbastanza adatte o almeno non nocive per i cani. La cosa più importante è che NON contengano OSSIDO DI ZINCO (zinc oxide) o ACIDO PARAAMINOBENZOICO (para-aminobenzoic acid = PABA) in quanto queste sostanze sono tossiche per i cani se ingerite. Secondo l'American Kennel Club (AKC) la crema solare da nutilizzare per i cani dovrebbe essere priva di ossido di zinco, PABA, profumo, dovrebbe anche essere resistente all'acqua e di almeno SPF30. Dalla mia esperienza personale, consiglio vivamente di non usare mai creme aperte da più di 12 mesi. Quello che faccio io è che inizio la stagione con creme nuove e in autunno me ne sbarazzerò perché ho notato un deterioramento della protezione UV già dopo 6 mesi. Se devo scegliere una crema solare umana, sto cercando una crema per bambini e per pelli sensibili, perché è meno probabile che abbiano fragranze e sostanze chimiche inutili che potrebbero causare irritazioni o allergie. Questo è un prodotto abbastanza sicuro da usare, io lo uso su Bibi perché la sua pelle è così chiara e delicata. È molto liquido, facile da applicare e non ostruisce i pori in quanto è non comedogenico. Avène Spray (o latte) 50+ per bambini https://www.avene.it/solari/protezione-solare/pelle-sensibile/latte-bambino-protezione-molto-alta-spf-50 è anche privo di ossido di zinco, PABA e profumo ed è altamente resistente all'acqua, quindi molto adatto se il tuo cane ama nuotare. Garnier Ambre Solaire kids advanced sensitive SPF50 e Uriage Bariésun 100, SPF50+ entrambi soddisfano bene i requisiti. Il marchio di Lidl Cien si posiziona effettivamente molto alto in classifica nei vari test di consumo e di qualità ed è molto economico. Cien sun per bambini SPF50+ è fantastico, privo di ossido di zinco, PABA e profumo ed è resistente all'acqua, noi usiamo anche questo, quindi posso consigliarlo personalmente. Eucerin SPF50 SENSITIVE PROTECT è privo di ossido di zinco e PABA, ma contiene fragranze che possono irritare alcuni cani. In un gruppo su facebook ho visto persone raccomandare il solare minerale Bioderma Photoderm, che dovrebbe essere ottimo per le persone con allergie alle barriere chimiche, ma NON È ADATTO AI CANI poiché questo prodotto contiene OSSIDO DI ZINCO! Bioderma Photoderm KID che è una linea per bambini può inizialmente sembrare sicura ma contiene XILITOLO e anche questo è tossico per i cani. CONTROLLATE SEMPRE LA LISTA DEGLI INGREDIENTI ! Quando si applica la crema, concentratevi sulle parti più esposte e su quelle meno pigmentate, e non dimenticare il naso o la punta delle orecchie perché queste si scottano molto facilmente dal sole!
